In the reflection between mathematics and music, the works performed during this evening's concert reveal several artistic attitudes.
György Ligeti, grand lover of Cantor's mathematics and fractals, prodigy of acoustic illusions and other "infinite colonnades" inspired by Brancusi, defying all existing models and creating his own piano self-portrait in the mirror of the minimal art of Reich and Riley. Daniele Ghisi, while both a young composer and an arithmetician, is very careful to keep the two activities separate reminding us of Xenakis who was once criticized for his use of exceptions to the rules. Karim Haddad, a composer passionate about rhythmical and metrical combinatorial structures, has decided to create problems rather than solve them using mathematics. Finally, we find the Karlheinz Stockhausen of 1960. Upon completion of a major theoretical work (his essay Comment passe le temps), Stockhausen wonderfully exhibits the continuum from rhythm, meter, harmony, and timbre, a discreet passage to the continual, a transition of sound that slowed down to become a rhythm, and an accelerated impulsion becomes height again in Kontakte. Combining instruments and electronics, sounds and noises, static and motion, large forms and the creation of new sound morphologies, the unprecedented tour de force in Kontakte is an extraordinary junction between theoretical thought and the act of musical invention.
